Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey made an appearance on MSNBC’s The Briefing on Thursday, where remarks were issued in response to recent public criticism from President Donald Trump. During the segment, host Jen Psaki raised concerns over whistleblower protections and political tensions, referencing Booker’s mention by the former president. The New Jersey Democrat appeared to dismiss any perceived threats or consequences from the Trump administration, offering what he described as a call to action.

Expressions such as throw me in jail and I’m going to continue to stand up were used by Booker to portray defiance amid what he framed as an atmosphere of intimidation. Booker referenced recent arrests of officials in Newark, alleging they were part of a broader effort to silence dissenting voices in public office.

According to Booker, it was stated that they’re picking off elected officials, including Rep. LaMonica McIver and the mayor of Newark. Despite these developments, Booker stated that fear would not determine his political engagement and encouraged others to join what he described as a resistance to growing authoritarianism.

Supporters were urged to stand up and fight, with Booker portraying the political landscape as one in which democratic rights and freedoms are under attack. Meanwhile, Rep. LaMonica McIver, the congresswoman referenced by Booker, is currently facing federal charges following an alleged assault on ICE agents at a New Jersey detention facility.

McIver reportedly made a virtual court appearance from Washington, D.C., where he was subject to limits on his ability to travel abroad and a surrender of his firearms. The hearing came after the Department of Justice indicted her on charges that carry a maximum eight-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000.

Though the congresswoman described the charges as politically motivated and racially driven, video footage reportedly showed physical contact being initiated by McIver against federal officers. The Justice Department has denied that political factors played any role in the decision to pursue prosecution.

Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, who once served as legal counsel for President Trump, emphasized that the rule of law had to be upheld, regardless of the individual involved. The charges, it was stated, stemmed from an alleged assault on federal personnel and were unrelated to any policy oversight responsibilities.

McIver, who has served New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since September, dismissed the charges as absurd during an appearance on CNN. She claimed her presence at the detention center was part of official duties and insisted the incident had been escalated by ICE agents.

However, law enforcement officials and court records point to the seriousness of the encounter, and critics argue that the situation reflects broader issues of accountability among elected officials who appear to place themselves above the law. While Booker continues to frame such prosecutions as politically charged, legal experts have noted that no evidence has been offered so far to support claims of political targeting by the Department of Justice.
