Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) recently stated that Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, deserves the opportunity to present his vision for the nation’s military. In a post on X, Ernst shared that she plans to continue engaging in constructive conversations with Hegseth and is scheduled to meet with him again next week.
Hegseth expressed gratitude for the ongoing dialogue, writing that he just had another substantive conversation with Senator Ernst. He appreciates her sincere commitment to defense policy, and she looks forward to meeting with her again next week.

Ernst’s comments come amid speculation about her potential political ambitions, with some suggesting that she may be attempting to undermine Hegseth’s nomination in favor of pursuing the position herself. However, Ernst has denied these rumors, clarifying that she is not leading any campaign against Hegseth. Previously, she and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) had voiced concerns about Hegseth’s qualifications, even suggesting that he might need to withdraw his nomination.

Hegseth’s confirmation process has been marred by controversy, including false claims that his tattoos were associated with white supremacy and the resurfacing of a 2017 sexual assault allegation. In addition, a New York Times report published an email from Hegseth’s mother in which she criticized him for mistreating women.
