Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has secured her fourth term in Minnesota’s 5th District, defeating her Republican challenger, former journalist Dalia Al-Aqidi. As a prominent member of the Squad, Omar is known for her outspoken positions on issues like Israel and Palestine, which have frequently sparked heated debates with colleagues across the political spectrum.

Omar’s remarks on Israel’s human rights record have drawn criticism from her detractors, who have accused her of spreading antisemitic language. Republicans in the House voted to remove her off the Foreign Affairs Committee in part because of this controversy. Al-Aqidi, an Iraqi Muslim who supports Israel, made this a major campaign issue, claiming that Omar’s strategy was polarizing and alienated the varied 5th District’s Jewish community.

A contentious issue since George Floyd’s untimely death in 2020, the latest election has brought attention to the larger discussion surrounding policing reform. Omar rose to prominence as a supporter of police reform, which included shifting police budgets to community programs. Al-Aqidi disagreed, calling Omar a hypocrite for reducing police spending while utilizing campaign funds for personal protection.

For Democrats, the 2024 elections brought few victories, as Republicans maintained control of the U.S. House and flipped the Senate, solidifying their hold on Washington for the first time in years. Former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race, signaling a major shift in the political landscape.
