President-elect Donald Trump on Friday appeared optimistic that, despite recent criticism, he could get his choice for Secretary of Defense confirmed by the Senate early next year. Trump nominated former Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth to lead the Department of Defense last month, praising him as a strong advocate for veterans and the military. However, recent allegations have surfaced, accusing Hegseth of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement.

Despite the allegations, the former president expressed confidence in Hegseth, stating that senators assured him they would support his nomination. Hegseth met with several senators this week to address the allegations and reassure them that the reports are unfounded.

Trump told Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker in an interview set to air on Sunday that it looks like Pete is doing well now, stating that he means that people were a little bit concerned. He’s a young guy with a tremendous track record, and he also went to Princeton and Harvard. He was a good student at both. But he loves the military, and people are starting to see it, so we’ll be working on his nomination, along with a lot of others.

Trump also mentioned that he had spoken with friends of Hegseth at Fox News, who have denied the allegations of a drinking problem. Trump himself does not drink alcohol. The president-elect added that Pete is a very smart guy. and he’s known him through Fox, but he’s known him for a long time, and he’s basically a military guy. Every time he talks to him, all he wants to talk about is the military. He’s a military guy.
