Concerns have been raised over Democrats’ perceived lack of urgency in reopening the federal government, with reports indicating that party members plan to attend a rally next week. During a Fox News interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson accused Democrats of engaging in political maneuvering at the expense of Americans’ welfare. He claimed that accolades received by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats from the far-left reflected an effort to appease the party’s base rather than address the ongoing government shutdown.

Johnson criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., for assigning blame to Republicans for the shutdown, describing the statements as “opposite of the truth.” He noted that three weeks prior, the House had voted to fund the military, pay federal employees, and keep the government operational through a clean continuing resolution, leaving the responsibility in the Senate’s hands.

Reports indicated that lawmakers voted late into the night last Thursday on the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, a $925 billion package funding the Pentagon. While the House GOP’s continuing resolution and Democrats’ counterproposal were discussed for a final vote, the effort was not completed, and both measures would likely have failed for the eighth consecutive time.

Johnson emphasized that the Democrats’ decision to delay funding payments had left approximately 2 million civilian workers and 1.3 million active-duty service members without pay. He highlighted the real-world impact, including disruptions to TSA operations, health and nutrition services, FEMA’s ability to issue flood insurance policies, and other essential government functions. Constituents were reported to be expressing concern over these service interruptions.

The House speaker also linked the delay to an upcoming rally on October 18, described as the “No Kings Day” protest, which is planned in multiple U.S. cities. According to Johnson, some Democrats are allegedly prioritizing participation in the event over reopening the government, citing pressure from their political base. Organizers claim the protest is intended to demonstrate that power belongs to the people rather than the government and to oppose President Donald Trump.

In closing, Johnson reportedly stressed that there had been no precedent in Congress for a party shutting down the government over a clean continuing resolution. He indicated that attempts to make the funding measure acceptable to Democrats had been exhausted and criticized their decision as a political fight against the Republican agenda, which he described as detrimental to the American people.
