Stephen A. Smith has publicly named Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Maryland Governor Wes Moore as his preferred choices for the Democratic presidential ticket in 2028, sidelining California Governor Gavin Newsom despite his national profile. Speaking on his SiriusXM show Straight Shooter, Smith told a caller from Wisconsin that Shapiro and Moore are his two favorites, emphasizing that he was just being honest, and not instructing anyone how to vote.

While Moore had already ruled out a 2028 presidential run, opting instead for a second term as Maryland governor, Smith urged Democrats not to underestimate him, describing Moore as the “real deal” and praising his ability to work across the aisle and communicate effectively, warning that attention should be paid to the governor. Shapiro, meanwhile, was highlighted as another standout, reflecting Smith’s focus on Democratic figures with moderate appeal.

Smith acknowledged Newsom’s polished image and debate skills but criticized his record as California governor, noting that rising homelessness, high taxes, and a costly regulatory environment could weaken him in a national race. He also observed that businesses leaving the state might damage Newsom’s prospects in a general election.

Ultimately, Smith suggested that Newsom’s reluctance to make tough decisions might be his greatest weakness, describing him as a kind man with good intentions but noting that, in office, one sometimes has to say no, something that did not appear to come naturally to Newsom. With 2028 speculation already underway, Smith’s picks highlight the Democrats’ struggle to balance charisma, policy experience, and electability, a challenge that may shape the party’s strategy for years to come.
