According to NBC’s Kristen Welker, President-elect Donald Trump has declined to accept the presidential salary once more, as he did during his first term. Trump said he was not planning to accept a salary when asked if he planned to accept the presidential salary.

He explained that he was giving up a significant amount of money and noted that, except for George Washington (whose situation is uncertain), every president has accepted their salary, but he has chosen not to. When asked about accepting the pension, Trump indicated that he believed he had not accepted any payments.  The President noted that he is entitled to an annual salary of approximately $450,000, which he has chosen not to accept, emphasizing that his decision has gone largely unacknowledged. Welker highlighted the importance of the decision, remarking on the significance of not accepting a salary.

Trump clarified his decision, stating that he neither accepted nor plans to accept a presidential salary, emphasizing that it was a personal gesture rather than a bid for recognition. He also expressed surprise that other presidents, particularly Roosevelt or Kennedy, had not made a similar choice, given their wealth.  During his first term, Trump had also declined the presidential salary, donating it quarterly to various agencies. In 2017, Trump’s quarterly salaries were donated to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, Department of Transportation, and the Education Department, as reported by Breitbart News.

In a gesture reflecting his commitment to philanthropy, Donald Trump donated his third-quarter salary in 2018 to a federal agency focused on alcoholism research. The cause holds deep personal significance for Trump, as his older brother, Fred Trump Jr., faced a tragic struggle with alcoholism that led to his passing at the age of 43 by continuing his commitment of generosity Trump’s first-quarter salary in 2019 was directed to the Department of Homeland Security. In 2020, he allocated one of his quarterly salaries to the National Park Service, aiming to repair and restore cherished national monuments.

This consistent philanthropy aligns with Trump’s campaign pledge in September 2015, where he promised voters he would forgo the presidential salary. True to his word, Trump honored this commitment throughout his presidency, directing his earnings to meaningful causes.
