Vice President-elect JD Vance reaffirmed his unwavering support for Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth on Friday, dismissing the ongoing media-driven smear campaign targeting the nominee. While visiting hurricane-affected areas in North Carolina, Vance emphasized that the nomination process would be conducted through proper Senate channels, not dictated by the press.

Vance stated firmly during the visit that Pete Hegseth will have his hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, not a trial by the American media and he continued by saying that he believes Pete Hegseth is the right choice to lead the Department of Defense, and that’s why President Trump nominated him.

This administration won’t yield to efforts by the media to influence decisions that rest with the president and the Senate. Donald J. Trump, elected by a significant margin, is entrusted with making these decisions, with the Senate providing its advice and consent. That’s the constitutional process, and they intend to follow it.

Vance expressed confidence in Hegseth’s eventual confirmation and made clear that the administration stood firmly behind the nominee saying that he fully supports Pete while he believes he will be confirmed, and committed to seeing that process through.

Addressing rumors of internal opposition, including speculation surrounding Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and other senators expressing doubts, Vance urged lawmakers to respect the Senate’s confirmation procedures.
Vance stated that all he asks is for senators to allow the process to unfold as intended and key government positions should not be determined by unverified allegations or anonymous media reports. The Senate’s advice and consent process is the proper avenue for evaluating nominees. Vance concluded by reiterating his commitment to upholding the integrity of the nomination process.

He mentioned that the Trump administration will ensure that the president’s nominees are considered fairly and thoroughly, through the procedures outlined by the United States Senate. And that’s how it should be, and that’s how we will proceed.
