Sen. Marco Rubio, who is anticipated to become President-elect Donald Trump’s next Secretary of State, is leaving the U.S. Senate seat in Florida open, and Lara Trump is considering taking it. According to those familiar with the situation, Lara Trump has spoken with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis about her Senate aspirations. DeSantis has the power to select a candidate to fill Rubio’s seat until a special election is held in 2026. In addition to her recent resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), being chosen would be a major milestone in Lara Trump’s political career.

Appointing Lara Trump could improve DeSantis’ ties with the Trump family, even though he has other candidates in mind, such as Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody. This is especially true considering the political tensions that have existed between DeSantis and Trump since DeSantis ran against him for the 2024 presidential nomination. Sources close to DeSantis, however, point out that he is weighing his alternatives and that Lara Trump’s selection is not assured.

Lara Trump, who moved to Florida with her husband Eric three years ago, has previously considered running for the Senate in her home state of North Carolina. She has expressed that she would seriously consider the opportunity to serve in Florida’s Senate seat, and with the backing of influential figures like Elon Musk and his mother, Maye Musk, she has garnered significant support. Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott also endorses Lara Trump for the role, citing her contributions to the Republican Party. Governor DeSantis is expected to decide by early January, and while some concerns exist about the optics of a potential deal with the Trump family, Lara Trump remains a strong contender for the seat.
