President Donald Trump has removed Caleb Vitello from his role as acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and reassigned him to a position more focused on enforcement. Vitello will remain with ICE, overseeing arrests, targeting, and field operations, according to NBC News.

His removal follows increasing criticism from both Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan over the pace of deportations and internal leaks within the agency. Trump’s broader initiative to remove millions of illegal immigrants is still in its early stages.

A former ICE official noted that Vitello has deep roots in the Enforcement and Removal Operations division, having built his career within that sector. Jason Houser, former ICE Chief of Staff, described him as someone who understands the complexities of the country’s broken immigration system. Meanwhile, Corey Price, a former acting executive associate director, characterized Vitello as a steady and non-controversial figure.

Meanwhile, Homan expressed outrage over a recent leak involving a planned ICE raid in Aurora, Colorado. In an interview with Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, Homan confirmed that the source of the leak had been identified and that he would be addressing the issue immediately. He warned that Homeland Security might begin prosecuting those obstructing ICE operations, emphasizing that such interference endangers officers.

The leaked operation comes amid growing concerns over Democratic lawmakers actively interfering with ICE enforcement efforts. Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY) has drawn scrutiny for advising illegal immigrants on how to avoid deportation. In a post on X, he encouraged individuals to “stay informed, stay safe, and stay together” and shared a video instructing them on handling ICE encounters.

Goldman’s spokesperson, Madison Andrus, went further, making the baseless claim that President Trump has a history of “abusing his power by detaining American citizens and legal residents.” In response, an ICE spokesperson clarified that American citizens are not subject to arrest, though agents may request identification when verifying an individual’s status.

Homan, who has been at the forefront of the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, has reiterated that obstructing federal law enforcement operations carries serious legal consequences. In December, he told the Daily Caller that existing federal statutes criminalize knowingly harboring illegal aliens and impeding federal officers, both of which are felony offenses.

With the administration ramping up its crackdown on illegal immigration, officials are making it clear that those who obstruct enforcement efforts will face legal repercussions.
