President-elect Donald Trump stated during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday that he would consider pardoning New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted on federal corruption charges in September. The indictment accused Adams of exchanging favors for campaign contributions linked to Turkey and using those contributions to secure matching city funds, as well as obtaining benefits like hotel upgrades.

Adams has denied the charges, with some legal experts suggesting they were the result of an overly aggressive, politically motivated investigation by federal prosecutors in New York. Trump responded affirmatively when asked if he would consider pardoning Adams, downplaying the charges by suggesting they were about minor benefits like airplane upgrades, something Trump claimed many people experience. He expressed the belief that Adams had been treated unfairly, particularly after opposing President Joe Biden’s border policies, which led to a surge of illegal migrants in New York City.

Adams recently met with Tom Homan, whom Trump has selected to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection, showing his willingness to cooperate with Trump on addressing the ongoing migration crisis in the U.S. Trump’s comments follow President Joe Biden’s recent decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, and grant additional pardons and commutations to various individuals, including those convicted of serious crimes.
