The Trump administration has intensified its efforts against sanctuary city policies by signaling plans to hold state and local officials accountable for obstructing federal immigration enforcement. A Justice Department memo from Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove outlines potential legal action against such officials, marking a renewed push to enforce immigration laws.

The directive emphasizes that “federal law prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing, and failing to comply with lawful immigration-related commands and requests.” Federal prosecutors who decline to pursue related cases may also face scrutiny and potential prosecution. The memo calls for the Justice Department’s civil division to challenge state and municipal policies that obstruct immigration enforcement.

In the meantime, the administration is moving swiftly to eliminate government DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. According to an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) document, all DEI and Accessibility (DEIA) offices across federal agencies must immediately close in accordance with President Trump’s executive order.

Key directives include:

  • Issuing notices to employees about the closure of DEI programs and identifying attempts to rebrand these initiatives under ambiguous terms.
  • Placing DEIA employees on paid administrative leave.
  • Removing public-facing content (websites, social media accounts) linked to DEIA initiatives.
  • Withdrawing documents and policies created under the now-repealed Executive Order 14035, which supported DEI efforts in federal workplaces.
  • Terminating DEIA-related contractors and training programs.

By Thursday, January 23, agencies must provide OPM with a list of active DEIA offices, employees, and contracts as of November 5, 2024. Plans for executing workforce reductions in these offices must be submitted by Friday.

President Trump’s executive actions also include policies affirming the recognition of only two genders—male and female—and revoking Biden-era preferences for DEI hiring practices, such as those implemented in the Federal Aviation Administration.

The executive order underscores the need to eliminate race- and sex-based preferences in hiring and education. Trump stated that those civil rights protections serve as a bedrock supporting equality of opportunity for all Americans. He criticized DEI policies as harmful and discriminatory, arguing that they undermine merit and competency in critical sectors such as aviation, law enforcement, and healthcare.

The order states that all so-called DEI initiatives are to be immediately rescinded in favor of hiring, promoting, and treating employees based solely on individual capability, competence, achievement, and dedication.

Trump’s administration positions these measures as a return to civil rights principles, advocating for merit-based policies and equal opportunity while opposing what it describes as divisive and discriminatory practices under the guise of diversity.
