Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) has reportedly taken a significant step toward supporting Pete Hegseth’s confirmation as Secretary of Defense. It was disclosed that Ernst and Hegseth convened in person on Monday afternoon, marking at least their second meeting since President-elect Donald Trump announced Hegseth’s nomination.

Following their discussion, Ernst issued a statement highlighting assurances provided by Hegseth. He had reportedly committed to conducting a comprehensive Pentagon audit and appointing a senior official who would prioritize the roles and welfare of servicemembers based on merit rather than quotas. Additionally, Ernst noted his pledge to reinforce efforts to combat sexual assault within the military ranks. Fox News’ Chad Pergram reported Ernst’s comments, in which she expressed optimism about a fair evaluation process, emphasizing her intent to support Hegseth as the nomination proceeds.

Ernst, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard, had previously been regarded as hesitant regarding Hegseth’s nomination. Speculation had also emerged suggesting Ernst may have harbored interest in the role herself. Amid criticism from conservative circles over her perceived reluctance, Ernst appears to be aligned closer to endorsing Hegseth’s confirmation.

Hegseth’s nomination has faced opposition, including what has been described as a coordinated media campaign recycling years-old allegations. Despite these challenges, Hegseth has reportedly maintained his focus, engaging individually with senators to address their concerns and outline his vision for the Department of Defense.

President Trump has remained steadfast in his support for Hegseth, commending his resilience. This support continues despite circulating rumors—viewed as potentially harmful to Hegseth’s confirmation—that Trump might consider Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as an alternative candidate.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), a prominent Republican figure on defense policy, has also voiced confidence in the confirmation of Trump’s nominees. Cotton, recently elected to a leadership role within the Senate Republican caucus, stated on social media that he anticipated all of President Trump’s nominations would secure Senate approval.
