In an interview with writer and international affairs analyst Tom Nichols on Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski responded to a statement by former Representative Liz Cheney about the election of President-elect Donald Trump.
In his most recent article for The Atlantic, Tom Nichols argued that democracy was still alive. Brzezinski went on to say that they would discuss Cheney’s comments regarding the election results soon. Cheney’s message circulated, stating that a new president-elect had been announced and that the country’s democratic system had operated as intended.

Cheney also emphasized that all Americans, regardless of their opinion on the outcome, were bound to accept the results of the election. Furthermore, she mentioned that citizens had a special responsibility to support and defend the Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that institutions remained strong in the coming years. According to her, courts, members of the press, and government officials at all levels would need to protect democracy.

Nichols responded by expressing his satisfaction that Trump had gained an absolute majority, implying that the nation could not have allowed another election in which the winner of the popular vote was elected president due to the Electoral College. Nevertheless, Nichols admitted that the electoral college was established by the nation’s founders because they did not think direct democracy could last.

Nichols further explained that this was now a clear choice, with the American people, 51% of whom had voted, making their preference known. He emphasized that this outcome was not accidental, nor was it the result of foreign interference or any fluke, but rather the legitimate will of the American people. He also agreed with Cheney’s statement, particularly highlighting the importance of safeguarding democracy, especially in courts, state houses, the federal civil service, and the military.
Concerns were raised by Nichols regarding the future of the country, with the observation made that something had changed in America that was deeply troubling. Nichols shared an experience from Pennsylvania, where he conversed with a Trump supporter and realized that a postmortem analysis of what could have been done differently by Biden, Harris, or others might not have made a difference.
