In a separate case, a Texas resident has been sentenced for obstructing law enforcement officers. A federal court in Del Rio issued an 18-month prison sentence to a Katy, Texas, man for charges related to assaulting and resisting officers.

According to court records, Kevin Dominguez, 26, drove a sedan to the U.S. Border Patrol immigration checkpoint along U.S. Highway 57 on August 1, 2023. A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to the vehicle’s trunk, where an individual was discovered. Upon this discovery, Dominguez reversed the vehicle, striking an agent, before attempting to flee.

A high-speed pursuit followed, during which a Border Patrol helicopter observed two individuals exiting the vehicle in an open field. One of the individuals was located and identified as an undocumented migrant from Honduras. Dominguez was indicted on September 13, 2023, and was subsequently arrested the following day. A guilty plea was entered on January 24, 2024.

Additionally, federal authorities have apprehended four individuals in El Paso, Texas, in connection with an alleged human smuggling operation. Court filings reveal that agents from the Ysleta Border Patrol Station’s Disrupt Unit had been monitoring a motel in El Paso when a vehicle with temporary registration was observed. The same vehicle had been seen at multiple motels known for harboring undocumented migrants.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured three individuals discreetly leaving a motel room and entering another vehicle with temporary registration. Yair Alejandro Aguilar-Flores, the driver, later admitted to being unlawfully present in the United States.

Angel Eduardo Carrillo-Carrillo and Jorge Alfredo Lopez-Acevedo, both passengers, were also discovered to have entered the country unlawfully. Additional undocumented individuals were later found within the motel room.

As the investigation continued, a second vehicle returned to the location. Its driver, Jesus David Reyes-Villagran, reportedly claimed ownership of the motel room and acknowledged having transported five additional undocumented migrants to another El Paso motel.

All four individuals face charges related to the transportation of illegal aliens, each carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison upon conviction. Meanwhile, a Honduran national with a prior criminal history has been taken into federal custody in Austin, Texas, for alleged unlawful re-entry into the United States.

According to court records, Melvin Armando Funes-Canales was located in the Williamson County Jail on or around July 16, 2024, following an arrest related to controlled substances. Further investigation revealed that he had previously been deported on October 9, 2020, and had been removed from the U.S. on five prior occasions.

Past convictions for burglary, grand theft, and illegal re-entry were also noted in the records. Funes-Canales has been charged with illegal re-entry and, if found guilty, faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
