President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has sought to put a halt to several legal cases initiated during the presidency of Joe Biden. The cases revolve around Biden’s executive actions concerning student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations, as reported by Fox News. As the new administration sought to reassess the basis for and soundness of Biden’s policies, Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed a number of motions Friday asking the Supreme Court to halt the student loan case and three environmental cases.

Oral arguments for these cases were anticipated to take place in March or April, with decisions expected later in the term. However, Trump’s DOJ requested that the high court suspend all written brief deadlines, effectively placing the cases on indefinite hold. Under Biden, more than 5 million students had their debt canceled by the Department of Education, but the move faced multiple legal challenges. Republican state attorneys general argued that the president overstepped his authority by issuing student loan forgiveness without Congressional approval.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked Biden’s ‘borrow defense’ rule, which had canceled the debt of students defrauded by their schools. The court found that the rule suffered from numerous statutory and regulatory shortcomings. The Supreme Court had agreed to hear arguments in these cases, but now, with the Trump administration requesting a freeze on deadlines, it is likely that the rules will be rescinded, making the cases effectively moot.

The three environmental cases involve regulations introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency during Biden’s tenure that were challenged in court, according to Fox News. Trump has strongly criticized Biden’s radical left “climate” agenda, launching a series of executive orders aimed at promoting domestic fossil fuel energy production. The executive orders also include a declaration of an “energy emergency,” offering protection from some legal actions seeking to block new drilling and other energy-related projects.

Just the News noted that these decisions could represent one of the most significant shifts in U.S. energy policy since the 1973 response to the Arab oil export ban. Upon taking office, Biden signed several executive orders, including rejoining the Paris Agreement, a nonbinding international pact aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions. His climate agenda unfolded through regulatory actions over the next four years, introducing new appliance efficiency standards, halting liquefied natural gas export permits, and imposing regulations on power plants by the EPA.

Trump’s “energy emergency” plan highlights support for mining critical minerals necessary for national security, emergency approvals for energy projects on public lands, and streamlining energy infrastructure development. In another executive order, Trump outlined strategies for energy resource development in Alaska. Additionally, Trump’s orders reversed several of Biden’s climate-related actions, including those affecting offshore drilling. Trump’s administration also withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement.

Jeff Reynolds, senior editor for Restoration News, speculated that Trump’s firm stance against Biden’s climate agenda stemmed from experience. While Trump had recognized the importance of energy and a favorable regulatory environment during his first term, Reynolds observed that the former president’s patience had waned after seeing the left’s aggressive moves under Biden. Reynolds remarked to Just the News stating that now he knows where the bodies are buried, and he’s ready to take a meat axe to everything that got in his way the first time.
