In a decisive start to his presidency, Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday directing the Justice Department to pause enforcement of a TikTok ban enacted under former President Joe Biden. The order, effective for 75 days, marks Trump’s intent to salvage the platform while exploring a potential U.S.-controlled partnership.

“Saving TikTok is a priority,” Trump stated, suggesting a possible arrangement where the United States would claim half ownership, leaving the remaining stake with TikTok. He remarked that If we would do it the deal for the United States, we should get half. TikTok has a good partner,”, emphasizing the strategic value of such a partnership. He also warned of tariffs against China should they obstruct negotiations, calling non-cooperation a “hostile act.”

The Biden-era law banning TikTok prohibits any Chinese entity from retaining control of the platform or its algorithms. Trump’s executive order requires him to report “significant progress” to Congress, alongside binding agreements for divestiture, ensuring TikTok’s compliance with U.S. national security standards.

Meanwhile, Trump’s administration hit the ground running, with the Senate unanimously confirming Marco Rubio as secretary of state. A seasoned lawmaker and foreign policy hawk, Rubio is set to spearhead efforts to curb China’s global influence, mediate the ongoing Ukraine conflict, and broker peace in Gaza. Known for his hardline stance on communist regimes, Rubio’s appointment signals a tough U.S. stance on adversaries.

The administration’s broader agenda includes over 200 executive actions targeting energy independence, border security, economic relief for American families, and dismantling federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. An official described the orders as “a historic series of actions aimed at restoring American sovereignty.”

With foreign policy challenges such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine looming, Trump has vowed to pursue bold strategies while cementing his domestic priorities. His opening moves signal a presidency defined by rapid action and unwavering commitment to his campaign promises.
