TRENDING IN AMERICA

The Woke movement's endorsement of Palestinian violence

Here is what's going on: After Hamas carried out the largest attack on Jews since the Holocaust, a number of left-wing voices in America, including activists, academics, student organizations, and social media users, publicly raced to defend the Palestinians. Their message is crystal clear: they are resisting "oppression" from "colonial" Israel, hence committing terrorist acts is ethically justifiable.

  • Catch up: Hamas has reportedly beheaded babies and burned families alive. It has also fired missiles into residential areas, shot citizens randomly, seized hostages, raped and killed women and paraded their remains, and taken hostages.

The language: Leftists justify the excessive violence as "self-defense," "decolonization," and "fighting the oppressor," while others hold Israel "entirely responsible." Images of paragliders, which terrorists used to assault a tranquil music festival at the commencement of Saturday's massacre, have been shared online by students organizing protests.

  • It's extreme: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), one of the most progressive Democrats in Congress and a vocal opponent of Israel, criticized the Democratic Socialists of America for supporting a pro-Palestinian protest, forcing them to issue an apology. Even after the apology, two more Democratic lawmakers criticized DSA, and one of them left the group.

Why it’s important: This fanaticism is a component of a larger ideology that has consequences for America, as leftists hold whole racial and ethnic groups accountable for oppressive systems and Western "colonialism."

  • Rationalizing violence: Black Lives Matter, repeating a popular leftist viewpoint, argued that there are "parallels between" Palestinians and black Americans as an excuse for violence. Leaders either remained silent or publicly supported the BLM movement's rioting, looting, and violence in 2020.

WASHINGTON D.C

Washington's worry over corruption in Ukraine

Here’s what’s happening: Over the past few weeks, the U.S. has repeatedly warned Kyiv to combat government corruption. Future non-military assistance might be contingent on Ukraine's development. This comes after a Politico story based on a secret document revealed the previously unreported increased level of concern the U.S. administration had about corruption in Ukraine.

Why it's important: As Ukraine protects its land from Russian aggression, the Biden administration wants to assist it. It worries that corruption could cost hundreds of billions of dollars in funding.

  • Keep up: Only 30% of the military aid to Ukraine was reaching where it needed to go, according to a CBS report that has since been suppressed, with the other funds being lost to corruption. Since the war started, there have also been a number of significant scandals, which is not surprising given that Ukraine was considered to be the most corrupt nation in Europe before the war.

  • Popular support: The government jeopardizes its capacity to preserve popular support for Ukraine by publicly voicing its worries about the latter. Both political parties' support for Ukraine has been progressively dwindling, and today the majority of Americans reject providing more assistance.

2024 ELECTION

President Joe Biden's border wall

Here is what's going on: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced his presidential candidacy as an independent, abandoning his Democratic bid. The 69-year-old environmental lawyer and activist, known for his fights against pollution and corporate power, has stirred controversy by questioning the U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Covid-19 vaccine efficacy, and vaccine safety on the Joe Rogan podcast.

Despite being seen as a long shot in the Democratic primary, he has garnered strong polling numbers, with 14% of voters supporting him in a hypothetical three-way race with Biden and Trump. His independent run aims to appeal to dissatisfied voters looking for an alternative to the expected Biden-Trump rematch, but it has drawn criticism from his own siblings and Republicans, who view his campaign as a liberal vanity project.

Kennedy's platform emphasizes honest government, healing political divisions, environmental issues, poverty assistance, ending foreign wars, and preserving freedom of speech while distancing himself from the "anti-vaccine" label. His candidacy is generating mixed reactions from both the left and right.
