TRENDING IN AMERICA

GOP candidates promise to limit Muslim migration

Here is what's happening: Several Republican presidential candidates argue that the United States shouldn't accept immigrants from nations with ties to Islamic terrorism as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues.

  • A discussion on Gazan refugees was started on Saturday by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who said that "the U.S. should not be absorbing any" of them due to their "toxic" culture, which "would increase antisemitism" and "anti-Americanism."

  • In order to fulfill his campaign pledge to stop immigration from "terror-plagued" areas, former President Donald Trump reinstated and expanded the travel restriction he enacted during his administration. According to Trump's campaign, he would also deport anybody who has "jihadist sympathies" and subject everyone to "ideological screening."

  • Other contenders: Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley all said that the US should not accept Palestinian refugees.

Why it's important: After Hamas's historic attack on Israeli civilians this month — and the sizable gatherings of Palestinian sympathizers in U.S. cities — Islamic radicalism has once again entered the national discussion. As border officers increasingly come into contact with immigrants on the terror blacklist, notably those from Iran, which supports Hamas, this heightens the GOP's already-existing fears about illegal immigration.

  • No assistance: While the United States has taken in hundreds of thousands of Muslim refugees over the past few years, Arab nations have refused to welcome Gazans fleeing the conflict.

Zooming out: In the West, there are increasing cultural tensions. Hijabi women have been spotted pulling down images of kidnapped Israeli youngsters who are thought to be held hostage by Hamas in London. A migrant is said to have cried "Allahu Akbar" before carrying off a murderous stabbing spree in France.

Jim Jordan cancels the third speaker's vote

Here is what's going on: House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan has decided to cancel the third vote for the House Speaker position due to insufficient support.

He received 199 votes in the second ballot, falling short of the 217 needed to become speaker. Jordan was expected to lose further votes in an upcoming ballot. Instead, he is now supporting House Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry until January.

The House GOP faced escalating tensions, and some members reported receiving threats for not voting for Jordan. Jordan has denounced these threats.
