Judge Blocks New Mexico Governor's Gun Rights Suspension

Here is what is going on: A federal judge blocked part of New Mexico Governor Michele Lujan Grisham's public health order suspending the carrying of firearms in public in Albuquerque. The governor issued the order after an 11-year-old boy was shot outside a baseball stadium. The order faced criticism from gun rights advocates, Republicans, and Democrats due to concerns about its constitutionality.

State Attorney General Raul Torrez refused to defend the order, stating it wouldn't improve public safety and likely violated the Constitution. Congressman Ted Lieu, a gun control advocate, also criticized the order, saying it violated the U.S. Constitution. The order led to legal challenges and calls for the governor's impeachment.

Here is what is going on: The "Press Forward" campaign, backed by a number of left-wing organizations, aims to "reverse the dramatic decline in local news" in the United States, noting that thousands of newspapers have shut down since 2005. Over the next five years, donors will give local news organizations more than $500 million.

Why it is important: Media organizations that rely on significant donations are compelled to please them by publishing stories that support their political agendas. These contributors receive increased power over the media, its narratives, and the public's thoughts in return for aiding a faltering industry.

• A developing trend: According to studies released last month, philanthropic funding for journalism is increasing. Last year, a nonprofit supported by liberal megadonor George Soros bought 18 Spanish-language radio stations with millions of listeners, infuriating conservative Hispanics.

Openly political: The organizations behind the Press Forward fund have a history of supporting left-wing causes like abortion, censoring internet "disinformation," and feminist and environmental concerns. They claim that encouraging local media will lead to social "progress" on everything from climate change and criminal justice reform to healthcare and education reform.

It might go wrong: According to research, a sizable majority of Americans blame the media for deepening political rifts and consider it to be blatantly biased. Increased partisan financial influence may further erode trust.

G20 countries concur to enact digital currencies

Here is what is going on: G20 leaders have decided on a strategy to roll out digital currencies and smart IDs for their populations under India's current leadership. The top developed and developing nations are represented in the G20.

Why it is important: Digital currencies issued by central banks are creating concerns among analysts, who warn that these currencies may compromise people's privacy and freedoms. They cite China as an illustration, where the introduction of digital currency resulted in heightened government surveillance and total control over residents' purchasing decisions.

• Zoom in: The G20's agreement relies on recent experiments India has conducted with its own digital currency as a guide. India hails these experiments as successful, while at the same time, the Reserve Bank of India is promoting a cryptocurrency prohibition.

Zoom out: Cavalcante is only one of tens of thousands of people who entered the country illegally and went undetected by law authorities. That number has risen to almost 1.5 million under President Joe Biden. Biden's border agents deliberately release hundreds of criminals, exacerbating the issue.
