Iran's interference in Biden's foreign policy

Here is what's going on: According to recently leaked documents, Iranian officials established a covert campaign in 2014 called the Iran Experts Initiative, creating a global network of scholars and academics and collaborating with them on their work, to promote Iran's viewpoints on nuclear weapons negotiations.

• Corporate media: In order to influence policymakers, the initiative's network was able to get articles for publication in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Foreign Policy, among other important publications.

•  The real kicker: Among these "experts" are two analysts from think tanks, a Pentagon policy consultant, and Robert Malley, who served as President Joe Biden's ambassador to Iran. Malley has been placed on administrative leave due to unspecified security issues. He is also being looked into by the FBI for allegedly handling secret information improperly.

Why it’s important: As a result, Iran has significant influence over U.S. foreign policy. Ariane Tabatabai, a top officer at the Pentagon, has a security clearance that allows her access to military secrets. Ali Vaez and Dina Esfandiary, the other two analysts, have advised American officials on policy. Malley allegedly made an effort to secure Vaez a position in the Biden administration.

Recap: In 2015, Malley served as the lead negotiator for a contentious agreement that eased American sanctions against Iran. While Esfandiary and other Iranian-backed academics produced papers and participated in interviews to sway public opinion, Tabatabai and Vaez helped him with the negotiations. The agreement was terminated by the late President Trump, but Malley and Biden have attempted to resurrect it.
