How do Palestinians in Gaza Feel About Hamas?

Here is what's going on: In reaction to the terrorist organization's attack on Israel earlier this month, President Joe Biden declared, "Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people." "They are causing innocent Palestinians great suffering," he continued.

Why it’s important: Despite popular opinion, Hamas's violent, antisemitic ideologies are more ingrained in Palestinian society and more representative of Gaza's populace than most Westerners are willing to acknowledge.

Right from the start: Instead of choosing the less radical Fatah party, Palestinians elected Hamas in 2006. Hamas has called for genocide in its founding papers since 1988. With a 77 percent turnout, Hamas triumphed with a resounding victory. Gaza's elections have been put on hold by Hamas militants since they took control.

Indoctrination: Palestinian entertainment and educational institutions indoctrinate young children as early as toddlers to carry out acts of violence against Jews, join terrorist groups that seek to destroy Israel, become suicide bombers, and take inspiration from the past acts of terrorist leaders.

Public opinion: Following this month's attack in Israel, a study revealed that 57% of Gazans had a favorable impression of Hamas. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a movement regarded as more extremist than Hamas, is supported by 71% of respondents.

  • As for now, according to Gallup polls from this year, support for a "two-state solution" has decreased from 59 percent to 24 percent since 2012.

  • An extremist generation: According to a Gallup poll, Palestinians think Israel has no right to exist less the younger they are.

In summary, Hamas has experienced declines in support during periods of severe destitution when Gazans believed their necessities were unmet. Nonetheless, Palestinian society has largely accepted the group's violent and nasty beliefs.

The Impact of President Biden’s Crises for 2024

Here is what's going on: As 2024 approaches, President Joe Biden must face the harsh truth that people don't like him. These polls add up to an average approval rating of slightly over 40%, according to 538. Former President Donald Trump leads the incumbent by a small margin in 2024 polls.

  • More depressing polls: Gallup recently revealed that Republicans are ahead of Democrats in national security and the economy. Although Biden has attempted to market his economic ideas as "Bidenomics," Democrats worry that the president is unaware of how dire things really are. The inflated prices don't seem to be going down.

Foreign policy: No significant battles or new wars started during the administration of former President Trump. However, under Biden's administration, there has been a catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan, the outbreak of a full-scale conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and an increase in hostilities between Israel and Gaza.

  • Notably, the humiliating American withdrawal from Afghanistan cannot be disregarded as a turning point in Joe Biden's administration, since Biden's popularity ratings fell off at that time and never rose again.

Similar to Bidenomics, Biden's advisers are attempting to turn 2024 into an election for foreign policy given that Americans now favor his stance on Israel. Some supporters of Biden are even pushing the notion that fighting overseas will boost domestic economic growth. Nonetheless, according to the same surveys, the majority of Americans oppose increasing military assistance to Ukraine.

  • His political advisers: It seems that his advisors believe he could benefit from his handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict. But it's doubtful that this one problem could materially alter his statistics given the volatility in the world and the unpredictability of the domestic economy.

Finally, The Republicans Elect a New Speaker

Here is what is going on: Following a dramatic, weeks-long stalemate within the House GOP, Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana's 4th congressional district, was elected as the new speaker of the House on Wednesday.

  • Catch up: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was removed earlier this month, and after a protracted period of uncertainty, Johnson was the unanimous choice in a Republican conference vote held behind closed doors on Tuesday night.

  • A split household: Earlier this month, the anti-McCarthy revolt changed the balance of power in the right-wing movement's cold war with the GOP establishment, marking one of the most spectacular wins for the right in recent memory.

His position on the matters:

  • Ukraine: Johnson has been disenchanted with additional spending, while having voted in favor of the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act, which began U.S. military assistance to Ukraine in April 2022. Republicans have given Johnson a "F" grade for his backing of the military actions in Ukraine.

  • Immigration: Border and immigration hawks give Speaker Johnson the thumbs up. He is regarded as a leading authority in the field by the restrictionist advocacy group Center for Immigration Studies. He is well-known for his firm positions and legislation intended to reduce asylum fraud.

  • Big Tech: Johnson presented a bill earlier this year that would prohibit workers and contractors of the executive branch from limiting speech protected by the First Amendment, together with Rep. Jordan and Sen. Rand Paul. Johnson has discussed the subject in public.

  • Social Issues: Speaker Johnson has consistently supported social conservatives with a strong voice. He has supported restrictions on abortion and curricula in schools that emphasize gender. He presided over a hearing on the dangers of child sex exchange practices earlier this year.

Next, what? Johnson has stated unequivocally that he will concentrate on passing legislation to assist Israel and that "our nation's greatest ally in the Middle East is under attack."

On media:

  • The "Ethics Prize," bestowed by Case Western Reserve University upon individuals who "have improved the condition of humankind," will go to Dr. Anthony Fauci. (WKYC)

  • Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) will enter a guilty plea for setting off a fire alarm without authorization during a legislative session. For the misdemeanor, he has consented to pay a fine; otherwise, he might face up to six months in jail. (ABC News, New York Post)

  • A man who broke into a Jewish family's California house yesterday was taken into custody by police. The family claimed he threatened to kill them because they were Jewish. Israel murders civilians. (KTLA5)

  • Only 3% of Americans have had the most recent COVID-19 booster dose. (Politico)
