🇺🇸 Jim Jordan did not win the Speaker position on the first ballot. After Ohio congressman Jim Jordan fell 20 votes shy of the number of votes required to take over as Speaker of the House, the GOP circus to choose a new Speaker of the House will go on for at least one more day. After Majority Leader Steve Scalise withdrew from the campaign last week, Jordan was the Republicans' most recent candidate. Since Kevin McCarthy was removed as speaker of the House by a small number of members of the right-wing Freedom Caucus, it has been two weeks. Before choosing a speaker, Congress cannot approve money for Israel or do much of anything. In the hopes of ultimately locating one, they will meet again today.

GOP Candidates' Middle East Strategy Approach

Here is what's going on: Politicians of all shades, including GOP 2024 primary contenders, have reacted to Hamas' brutal attack on Israel and its aftermath. The GOP has been divided between supporters of American interventionism and those who favor less of it, but when it comes to Israel, its candidates are more or less in agreement.

What they’re saying

• The front-runner and former president Donald Trump sparked controversy when criticizing Israel following the attack by dubbing Islamic terrorists "smart." Later, he claimed that no other president would be able to defend Israel.

• Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida, has made it obvious that he supports Israel, but he refrained from advocating for immediate American military involvement. He recently booked airfares for Americans who were stranded in the nation back to Florida.

• Mid-August, Vivek Ramaswamy called for cutting aid to Israel; as of right moment, he believes the U.S. should give it upon request.

• Former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley asserted that President Joe Biden's hostage agreement with Iran is to responsible for Hamas's acts, calling them an "attack on America."

• Mike Pence, a former vice president, wants the United States to offer military assistance and has referred to Trump, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy as "voices of appeasement." In the event that Hamas refuses to release the American prisoners in Gaza, he has also urged that the US should dispatch Special Forces to free them.

There aren't any obvious dividing lines: Unlike the subject of help for Ukraine, which went along the usual GOP dividing lines of interventionism vs isolationism, there is no debate on aiding Israel.

Biden Treads Carefully During Israel Visit

Here is what's going on: President Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv to reaffirm U.S. support for Israel and discuss plans for humanitarian aid in Gaza. The visit followed a major explosion in a Gaza hospital, which led to conflicting claims about its cause. Biden had plans to meet with regional leaders but had to cancel after the hospital blast, leading to protests in the region.

The visit's objective was: According to American sources, Biden's major goals are to de-escalate the possible spread of regional violence and to have Israel carry out a humanitarian plan for Gaza before Israel starts a ground invasion.

• Biden is anticipated to concentrate on exerting pressure on Netanyahu to open the border between Gaza and Egypt to allow civilians to leave and enter Gaza. Jordan and Egypt will not admit Palestinian refugees, according to Abdullah's statement from yesterday.

• Biden also hopes that his participation would send a message to Iran, whose foreign minister warned on Monday that Iran's allies, such as the oppressive Syrian regime and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, will attack Israel on "multiple fronts" if Israeli raids on Gaza continue.

The US would likely need to shift more of its foreign policy focus from Russia and China to the Middle East if the violence escalates into a bigger regional conflict. About a dozen ships have already been moved by the Pentagon to Gaza's and Israel's Mediterranean coasts, and an extra 2,000 US troops have been told to prepare for possible deployment.

Jim Jordan Likely to Lose Second Speaker Vote

Here is what's going on: House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan is facing difficulties in his bid for the House speaker position. At least 11 Republicans have voted against him in a second round of voting, and he can only afford to lose four votes.

In the initial round of voting, Jordan fell 17 votes short of the 217 needed to win the position. His chances depend on gaining more support in the ongoing vote, and if he does, a third vote may be considered.

Some Republicans are now considering expanding the powers of interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry due to the prolonged leadership deadlock.
