🚨 Protesters at Columbia University disobeyed instructions to disperse. Anti-Israel protestors were given till Monday at 2:00 p.m. by Columbia President Minouche Shafik to leave their tent camp, but instructors and students disobeyed the directive. Dozens of students stormed into and took over an on-campus building late on Monday night, declaring their purported success by flying a "Intifada" banner from the top.

🏛 State coverage of transgender surgery is mandated by a federal appeals court ruling. West Virginia and North Carolina's decision to forgo government insurance coverage for sex-change surgery was overturned by a federal appeals court because it was discriminatory. This ruling is a significant turning point since it requires the state to acknowledge the surgical necessity of these procedures.

🙅‍♂️ Over a hundred prominent attorneys will call on Biden to stop supporting Israel. About ninety lawyers, twenty of whom are from federal agencies, intend to write to A.G. Merrick Garland claiming that providing military assistance to Israel is illegal under both international and U.S. law. Democrats' opinions on Israel are not just split, but they also no longer support the president's administration in its entirety.

🇺🇦 A security agreement spanning ten years is being worked on by the US and Ukraine. Negotiations for the continuation of "armed support, financial, political, and joint arms production" between the United States and Ukraine have been declared by President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. The pact begs the question of what Ukraine's political environment will even look like in ten years, given Russia's ongoing aggression.

Biden circumvents SCOTUS on loan cancellations

Here is what’s going on: After the Supreme Court rejected his initial attempt to reduce student loan debt last year, President Joe Biden is currently working to find a solution for millions of Americans.

Why is it important? There is a lack of enthusiasm among young people to support Biden in November. Severe actions such as the abolition of student loan debt may increase Biden's standing with that important constituency.

Blocked earlier: Approximately 40 million people would have been impacted by the president's prior attempt to waive $10,000 in student loan debt for all federal loan holders. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the legislation, stating that the executive branch had applied it too broadly.

New plan: Biden has discovered various methods to "forgive" student debt after the 2022 Supreme Court verdict, canceling around $153 billion in debt in total. Up to thirty million Americans who fall into different groups would be impacted by the proposed strategy.

  • New logic: The White House's new justification is that the Higher Education Act would allow the Education Secretary to forgive loans for borrowers whose debt grew as a result of unpaid interest obligations.

  • Opponents: Biden is already facing legal challenges from a group of 17 state attorneys general, who contend that he has the jurisdiction to waive debt for a large number of people.

Sailing blindly: In May 2020, Biden had a 23-point advantage against Trump among voters under 30; today, that gap is merely 8. Democrats believe that the war in Gaza is to blame for the decline in support, but a data study reveals that Biden's unpopularity with that group predates the October 7 slaughter. It might need more than just questionable attempts to waive loans to win over young voters.
