WASHINGTON D.C

The fraud scam, which affected the indictments related to Trump's election

Here is what’s going on: The current accusations against former president Donald Trump involving his conduct after the 2020 election were motivated by a long-debunked hoax that Trump allegedly told Georgia authorities to use to rig thousands of ballots.

The story behind Trump instructed Georgia's chief elections investigator to "find the fraud" in a phone call, according to an unnamed source who spoke to The Washington Post in January 2021, and to become a national hero. In another call, Trump had instructed the secretary of state for Georgia to find the votes. According to the media's narrative, Trump asked officials to rig the election in his favor.

  • The main facts: Trump claimed that he had won very substantially the election and demanded a thorough investigation to uncover the alleged fraud and electoral dishonesty, according to a transcript that was eventually made public. Trump was not proposing that the officials fake ballots, the transcript showed.

It was too late, though: The false story caught on quickly in the media and was even used as evidence in Trump's second impeachment trial. Now that the phone call with the secretary of state has been included in their indictments, Special Counsel Jack Smith and Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis are claiming falsely that Trump instructed them to invalidate honest election results. Nevertheless, Willis said that the phone call was a central focus of her inquiry.

Why it is important: The challenging goal for both prosecutors is to show that Trump acted dishonestly and didn't trust his own charges of voter fraud. They will not be helped by the fact that their evidence includes a partisan media narrative, nor will it change the widely held belief that these cases are politically driven.

2024 ELECTION

Inside the stunning delegate fight for the Trump campaign

Here is what’s going on: The former president Donald Trump's team is attempting to get state GOP parties to modify their primary laws to his advantage.

  • The Winner-takes-all: He will now receive all 169 of California's significant delegates if he achieves 50 percent of the vote, which he is certain to do because his campaign forced the California GOP to revise its delegate rules to become a "winner takes all" state.

  • The delegate "bound": If no candidate receives a majority of the delegates, delegates frequently have the option to change their vote at the convention. Although a majority may not be achieved, the campaign is putting pressure on Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Colorado to compel delegates to support their designated candidate.

  • Primaries against caucuses: States like Idaho have been under pressure from the Trump campaign to use caucuses to choose delegates. Caucus voters are more politically engaged than primary voters, hence they typically favor well-known candidates like Trump.

Why it is important: A candidate needs the support of more than 1,234 delegates in order to secure the nomination. Based on the number of Republican-elected officials and congressional districts, each state sends delegates to the national convention. The intricate processes for distributing those delegates to a candidate are up to each state party.

More details: Similar to ordinary elections, people cast their ballots in secret at polling places during primaries. But in caucuses, a group of registered party members gather, discuss the candidates, and then cast their votes at the conclusion of the meeting. Republican state parties are increasingly moving away from state primary elections and toward party-run caucuses, as seen in Nevada and Michigan.

2024 ELECTION

The 2024 Election donor-class debates

Here is what’s going on: At the night of the GOP presidential primary debate, Vivek Ramaswamy was the center of attention, while Ron DeSantis was reserved, neocons Nikki Haley and Mike Pence played the part, and other contenders failed to make an impression.

Why it is important: The most well-liked candidate among voters prior to the debate was former President Donald Trump, who polled higher than all other contenders combined. In order to gain traction against the former president, contestants in the debate concentrated more on winning over funders than voters.

  • Gov Ron DeSantis: Polling in second place, the Florida governor had the most to lose in attending the debate. And it showed. DeSantis strained as he tried to appeal to the donor class, avoiding a hard-line stance on the Ukraine war, staying quiet for long periods, and forcing smiles. (The donor class loathes nonconventional foreign policy.)

  • Vivek Ramaswamy: However, 38, who is not supported by a super PAC, captured the majority of attention throughout the discussion with his outspoken positions: He declared that Ukraine's financing should be reduced, that the climate change agenda is a fraud, and that every other candidate was a super PAC puppet.

The main questions: Immigration, censorship, election integrity, vaccine requirements, and the militarization of the federal government received less attention.

  • The media outlet: According to TheBlaze editor-in-chief Matt Peterson, Fox is apparently incapable of asking questions actually representing the views of the majority of Republican voters who support Donald Trump. The Blaze and Tucker Carlson conducted a conference with some of the candidates last month.
