Following the passing of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who had been receiving treatment for esophageal cancer, the position of ranking member on the powerful committee became vacant. In the interim, Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), a senior member, was chosen to serve temporarily and has since voiced his interest in assuming the role permanently.
