Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) is set to become Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) on Monday, December 9, following the abrupt resignation of Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA), which allowed California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) to appoint Schiff early.

This move, though technically legal, is seen as a strategic attempt to give Schiff seniority over newly-elected Senators from other states, who will not be sworn into office until January 3, 2025. Governor Newsom’s office issued a statement confirming the appointment of Schiff to complete the remainder of Butler’s term.

Senator Butler had resigned effective December 8, 2024, to ensure that Californians would have a duly elected representative in place as soon as possible. Schiff, who won election to a full Senate term beginning in January, is scheduled to be sworn in the following day.

Newsom had appointed Butler last year to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). However, Newsom faced criticism from some black Democrats for not appointing Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA), who was running for Senate at the time against Schiff.

The rise of Schiff to the Senate has meant that another black woman had to step aside, a development that is likely to raise concerns and spark debate.
In other news, Schiff made headlines on Sunday when President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News that he believes members of the January 6 Committee, including Schiff, should be jailed for their alleged abuses of civil liberties. Schiff’s response to these comments remains to be seen.

Schiff’s political career has made him a polarizing figure, especially among Republicans, many of whom opposed his efforts to remove then-President Trump from office during the first impeachment. While he is not particularly popular in California, Schiff has proven to be a highly successful fundraiser and a skilled political strategist.
