An organization founded by former Vice President Mike Pence has launched a campaign to pressure Republican senators to oppose Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president during his first term, is strongly opposed to Kennedy due to his past support for abortion rights.

Advancing American Freedom, led by Pence’s former chief of staff Marc Short and President Tim Chapman, expressed concerns in a letter to senators about Kennedy’s commitment to protecting unborn children.

It was written by Chapman and Short that, while RFK Jr.’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ initiative may have merit, an HHS Secretary must unwaveringly protect the unborn or face the pressures surrounding these critical decisions. It was further stated that, despite RFK Jr. making gestures to pro-life leaders, there was little confidence that his actions would align with their concerns.

This marks the second effort by Pence’s organization to block Kennedy’s confirmation. Soon after Trump announced Kennedy’s nomination, Pence issued a statement urging senators to reject the pick due to Kennedy’s past stance on abortion, according to The Hill.

Kennedy, initially running for president as a Democrat, had endorsed a ban on abortion after the first trimester but later reversed his position. He also opposed banning abortion before fetal viability, typically around 24 weeks.

On his campaign website, Kennedy declared himself a “firm supporter” of the principles established in Roe v. Wade and pledged support for legislation to restore abortion rights if the courts did not overturn Dobbs v. Jackson.

Despite Kennedy’s past statements, many GOP senators have remained supportive of his nomination after meeting with him. Kennedy worked to reassure Republican lawmakers by emphasizing that his personal views were irrelevant to his role and that he would implement the anti-abortion policies from Trump’s first administration.

President Trump has repeatedly stated that states should have the authority to decide abortion laws, following the Dobbs v. Jackson decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022. Trump has presented himself as a centrist on the matter throughout his campaign.

However, Pence, a staunch advocate for religious conservatism, has criticized his former boss on several policy matters, particularly abortion. He previously referred to Trump’s position on abortion as a “slap in the face” to those who oppose abortion.

Amid this tension, Pence and Trump briefly interacted at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. While their handshake garnered attention, Pence expressed optimism about moving beyond their past conflicts.

It was told by Pence to Christianity Today Editor-in-Chief Russell Moore in an upcoming podcast episode that the opportunity to speak to the president the previous day was greatly appreciated. It was shared that blessings were felt from the positive reactions of people who witnessed their handshake and found hope in that moment. Pence’s wife, Karen, however, did not acknowledge the Trumps at the funeral, highlighting the ongoing rift within the former vice president’s family.
