Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pushed back against recent statements by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who claimed that Mexico had agreed to curb migration and effectively seal the U.S.-Mexico border.

Addressing the press on Thursday, Sheinbaum acknowledged that discussions with Trump had taken place, primarily focusing on issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking—topics tied to Trump’s proposal of imposing a 25% tariff on Mexican exports. However, she firmly stated that no agreement had been reached to close the border or halt migration entirely.

Sheinbaum described the conversation as productive and indicated an intention to maintain open lines of dialogue moving forward. As reported by Reuters, she noted that it was a good conversation, and we will keep having conversations.

It was stated on Truth Social by Trump that Sheinbaum had allegedly agreed to measures aimed at stopping migration through Mexico and into the United States, which he claimed would effectively close the southern border. In response, the Mexican president countered this narrative by emphasizing Mexico’s dedication to addressing the underlying causes of migration rather than implementing strict border closures.

Sheinbaum outlined Mexico’s strategy to manage migration flows, focusing on collaboration with neighboring countries to address the factors driving people to leave their homes. She reinforced this position in a post on X, stating, that Mexico’s stance is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and their peoples.
