Joe Biden called the overthrow of former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad a fundamental act of justice after the 13-year civil war in Syria reached a major turning point. Assad was forced to leave Syria when Islamist insurgents overran the capital city of Damascus early on Sunday. Biden underlined that Assad’s government had murdered thousands of innocent Syrians over the years, even if he acknowledged that some of the opposition groups participating had a history of terrorism and violations of human rights.

In his comments, Biden acknowledged that Assad had been compelled to step down and leave, but he also mentioned that there were rumors that he had taken sanctuary in Moscow and later on  Russian media made sure that Russia had granted humanitarian asylum to Assad and his family. With the support of Russia and Iran, Assad’s ouster might change the balance of power in the Middle East, making this a significant turning point in the ongoing battle in Syria.
