Conservative commentator Dan Bongino has garnered praise from an unexpected source: liberal former Fox News host Geraldo Rivera. Rivera, speaking during an interview on CNN with host Brianna Keilar, shared his belief that Bongino would be an excellent pick to lead the United States Secret Service, especially amid reports suggesting that President-elect Donald Trump is considering him for the top position.
Keilar, who has previously sparred with Bongino on air, asked Rivera for his thoughts on the possibility of Bongino becoming Secret Service director. She mentioned that he was being floated as a potential candidate for the position and inquired about how someone might feel about him taking the job.

It was noted by Rivera that his past clashes with Bongino had been intense, but he also acknowledged respect for Bongino’s qualities. It was said that if Bongino were to walk into a bar where Rivera was having a beer, a confrontation might have occurred. However, Rivera stated that there were no issues with Bongino’s honesty, credibility, character, or patriotism, and his love for the Secret Service was seen as a positive trait.

It was pointed out by Rivera that, while many individuals in Trump’s Cabinet are well-known and charismatic figures, the ability to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of running large agencies should be assessed. It was noted that Bongino’s leadership was seen as a factor that would ensure safety. Rivera stated that, if he were a target, confidence would be felt in Bongino’s ability to keep him safe and perform the job.

Rumors about Bongino’s potential appointment as Secret Service director have been circulating, especially on social media. Bongino, a former Secret Service agent himself, has been an outspoken critic of the agency’s performance, particularly after two failed assassination attempts on Trump.
Forbes reported that Trump is weighing his options for the role, with Bongino and former USSS head Sean Curran as leading contenders. Bongino has previously criticized the Secret Service for what he called a “catastrophic failure” in preventing an assassination attempt on Trump. His comments reflect concerns over the agency’s competency after the failed attacks.

Following the resignation of former USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle, who was pressured by both parties to step down after the security lapses came to light, speculation about Bongino’s appointment has intensified.

Trump has been busy shaping his second-term administration, meeting with key allies, and considering personnel decisions for top roles. According to Forbes, he is relying on influential right-wing groups, including the America First Policy Institute, to guide his decisions. With figures like Elon Musk providing input and others vetting candidates, Trump is carefully selecting personnel for critical positions ahead of his second term.
