Left-wing networks are facing a significant blow after Trump’s strong performance and victory in the November 5 election, as many of their hosts and guests had been rooting for Vice President Kamala Harris to secure a victory. Now, they’re confronted with another challenging issue: a large-scale loss of viewership.
According to Nielsen ratings, MSNBC, home to prominent left-leaning figures like Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid, saw a sharp 23 percent drop in viewership on Thursday compared to the same day in 2023, as reported by Mediaite, a liberal outlet that covers media industry news.

According to Mediaite, CNN’s predicament was even worse, as its ratings fell by 43% on Thursday. Both networks saw equally depressing primetime ratings. Compared to the same day last year, MSNBC’s primetime viewership fell by 54%, while CNN’s declined by 30%.

Alex Wagner, the host, was a crucial factor in MSNBC’s downfall. Since its August 2022 debut, Alex Wagner Tonight’s ratings have been at their lowest point. Chris Hayes, who is well-known for his conservative criticism, saw his show’s ratings plummet to their lowest point since May 2016, just before Trump’s first term as president.

Meanwhile, Fox News, a right-leaning network, experienced a surge in viewership, with ratings for Thursday rising by 60 percent compared to November 7, 2023, according to Mediaite. The trend continued into Friday, with similar results reported for that day.
Mediaite noted that on Friday, seven MSNBC programs recorded their lowest Friday ratings for the year, while the network also saw its lowest-rated Friday prime-time programming of the year outside of holiday weekends. This decline comes just days after MSNBC surpassed its progressive rival CNN. On Election Day, MSNBC drew 6 million viewers, far outpacing CNN’s 5.1 million, suggesting that liberal viewers had turned to MSNBC for their news. However, neither network came close to Fox News’ dominant viewership, which recorded 10.3 million viewers on Tuesday.

Mediaite added that MSNBC’s struggle to retain its audience signals a potential shift in sentiment on the left, as initial hopes for Harris victory against President Donald Truùp quickly turned to defeat and anxiety in the face of Trump’s impending return to power in January. In another development, veteran broadcaster Chris Wallace, who left Fox News and joined CNN a few years ago, announced yet another career change.

Wallace, whose viewership dramatically declined at CNN, stated he would now seek opportunities on independent platforms, such as streaming or podcasting, which he believes are where the real action is. He pointed to podcasters like Joe Rogan and Charlamagne tha God as influential figures during the presidential election but downplayed his expectations of reaching similar heights.
Wallace’s decision to leave CNN at the end of his three-year, seven-figure contract instead of renegotiating signals a pivotal moment for cable television, as many other anchors face potential layoffs or salary cuts amid declining ratings and the financial pressures caused by cord-cutting. Wallace, who was a key figure in CNN’s election night coverage, had predicted that Kamala Harris would need a “miracle” to win after the first exit polls revealed the extent of her challenges.
