Axios has reported that a symbolic boycott of the upcoming inauguration is gaining momentum among certain Democrats. Notable figures like Rep. Thompson told Axios that for somebody who said he was going to lock him up, he didn’t see the excitement in going to see his inauguration. Other Democrats refusing to attend include Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Delia Ramirez, D-Ill. According to the outlet, 13 lawmakers have confirmed their boycott, while 20 remain undecided. Despite the resistance, several Democrats have chosen to attend, citing respect for the democratic process.

Sen. Jacky Rosen, a Democrat from Nevada, has stated that she plans to attend the inauguration, highlighting her respect for the Office of the President and her confidence in a peaceful handover of power. Other well-known Democrats, such as Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt.; Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.; and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., will join her. Despite ongoing disagreements within the Democratic Party about how to handle Donald Trump’s presidency, the choice to attend shows a dedication to preserving democratic traditions. This conflict highlights the larger discussion about striking a balance between defiance of his policies and conformity to institutional standards.
