Rogers, a former FBI agent, congressman, and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, had been rumored as a contender for the role after meeting with Trump’s transition team at Mar-a-Lago. However, members of the MAGA movement raised alarms about Rogers’ history, particularly his role in asserting Russian interference in the 2016 election. Rogers’ affiliation with The Alliance for Securing Democracy, a group criticized for its involvement in the controversial Hamilton 68 project targeting social media accounts for alleged Russian disinformation, further fueled opposition.

Meanwhile, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) announced his withdrawal from consideration as Trump’s attorney general nominee, citing concerns over the distraction his confirmation process could cause. Gaetz thanked supporters in a statement on X, but he pointed out that his candidacy was becoming a distraction from the important job being done by the Trump-Vance Transition. On Truth Social, however, Trump commended Gaetz, calling him a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney and emphasizing his track record of advocating for changes at the Department of Justice.

After Gaetz resigned, Trump appointed former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to head the Department of Justice. Trump revealed that Pam had been a prosecutor for almost 20 years, working to keep Florida streets safe for families and being extremely strong on dangerous offenders.

Trump noted that, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, Pam took significant steps to combat the trafficking of dangerous drugs and address the fentanyl overdose crisis, which has deeply affected countless families nationwide. Her remarkable efforts earned her a position on the Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during his first term, where her work was credited with saving numerous lives.
Trump asserted that the partisan Department of Justice had been weaponized against him and other Republicans for far too long, but he promised that this would end. He emphasized that Pam would redirect the DOJ toward its primary mission of combating crime and restoring safety across America. Bondi was praised as a smart and tough America First fighter.

Bondi’s nomination has sparked apprehension among Democrats and left-leaning commentators. MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson voiced concerns about her competence and effectiveness, warning that Bondi could effectively implement Trump’s agenda. Johnson said during a panel discussion that Pam Bondi was competent and knew what she was doing.
He highlighted Bondi’s track record in Florida, including her strict stance on immigration and education policies, suggesting she could bring a similar approach to the national level.
Johnson remarked that Bondi was a dangerous and highly effective choice, going so far as to say her selection was even worse than what might have been expected with Matt Gaetz. He suggested that her nomination pointed to a potentially authoritarian shift for the Justice Department under Trump. Despite the criticism, Trump has remained unwavering in his support for Bondi, framing her appointment as a crucial move to restore integrity and purpose to the DOJ.
