Jim Jordan engaged in a tense exchange with CNN’s Dana Bash during an interview on State of the Union, where the topic of President-elect Donald Trump’s promises of retribution was discussed.

Trump’s campaign rhetoric regarding retribution was brought up by Bash, and it was responded to by Jordan, with the statement made that people talk about retribution; the retribution has been from the other side. Efforts to stop retribution have been made by me for the last… 10 years.

As Bash attempted to interject, she clarified that she was referring to Trump’s promises of retribution and questioned whether Jordan would support Trump using the Justice Department to prosecute his alleged opponents. Jordan responded by noting that Trump had not done so in his first term.

Bash continued pressing Jordan, asking if he would back such measures in Trump’s second term. In reply, Jordan pointed to alleged instances of political targeting by the Biden administration, claiming that we’re the party who’s against political prosecution and against going after your opponents using lawfare.

The discussion then shifted to the issue of free speech, where Bash and Jordan disagreed on whether Trump’s staff supported it. A heated conversation also ensued on the topic of illegal immigration when Bash asked which immigrants would be deported.

During the conversation, Bash referenced individuals such as President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Liz Cheney, former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark Milley, Nancy Pelosi, Senator-elect Adam Schiff (D-CA), Kamala Harris, and others, suggesting that they could be targets of Trump’s promised retribution, which Trump and his allies claimed was payback for his politically motivated prosecution.

The debate continued with Bash questioning the integrity of the 2020 election, highlighting how Vice President Kamala Harris had received millions fewer votes than Biden. She suggested that Republicans only focus on election fraud claims when they lose, not when they win.

Jordan countered by emphasizing that the 2020 election had been a historic political comeback, mentioning the comparison between the two presidential administrations and what voters appreciated under Trump’s leadership safer streets, lower gas prices, and a secure border. He dismissed the notion that the election was not free and fair, pointing instead to a lack of vision and record among Democrats.

Bash, however, pressed him on whether he believed the election was free and fair, citing the claims of fraud that had been raised by Trump and his allies. Jordan insisted, “I do,” but Bash continued to question the discrepancy in votes received by Biden and Harris.

Jordan then addressed concerns raised during the 2020 election, particularly regarding mail-in voting, citing Pennsylvania’s lack of signature verification for millions of ballots. He concluded by challenging the Democrats’ performance in the 2024 election, pointing out the loss of 10 million votes for Biden in comparison to 2020. He argued that this loss occurred because Democrats had failed to offer a strong vision or record, resorting to name-calling and lawfare instead. He asserted that these factors, coupled with economic issues like inflation and high gas prices, led to Trump’s success with voters.
