Republican lawmakers are pushing back against a Biden-Harris initiative, keeping the House of Representatives aligned with President-elect Donald Trump’s sweeping victory. This substantial win not only secured the White House for Republicans but also granted them control of the Senate and House, giving them what many see as a mandate to pursue significant change.

In the wake of Trump’s victory, GOP lawmakers have found the resolve to tackle issues that had previously been sidelined. One such issue is the controversial diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, which conservatives argue are nothing more than a thinly veiled form of anti-white racism.

The Center Square reported that U.S. Representative Bob Good, R-La., introduced two bills to end DEI practices at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The first bill, the Flexibility in Housing Act of 2024, aims to block a Biden-Harris administration rule at HUD that would require grant recipients to implement “equity-driven housing plans.” This bill would shift power back to states and local governments, allowing them to determine how best to allocate funds for housing.

The No Discrimination in Housing Act, the second bill, would prohibit big businesses from obtaining tax credits for single-family house purchases through DEI projects. Economists have cautioned that these kinds of programs raise the cost of homeownership. The proposed measure would guarantee that the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit is awarded based on merit rather than ideological preferences by disqualifying organizations with DEI programs.

Representative Good criticized the Biden administration’s housing policy, claiming it prioritizes DEI-driven corporations while doing nothing to address the affordability crisis caused by inflation. He argued that his bills would restore housing flexibility from the Trump era and eliminate the DEI policies that prevent families from achieving the American dream.

Additionally, the Dismantle DEI Act, which passed the House Oversight Committee, was introduced by Texas Republican Rep. Michael Cloud. This bill seeks to return to a “colorblind” approach, rejecting DEI practices as a divisive ideology.

Cloud emphasized the difference between the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion and their implementation as a government policy. He argued that when these principles are redefined as an ideology, they move away from their original purpose and instead seek to categorize individuals based on race and other immutable characteristics, rather than focusing on personal achievements and character.

In September, Fox News commentator Greg Gutfeld also brought attention to the DEI discussion when he called the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris a DEI debate. Gutfeld accused the debate moderators of utilizing a double standard, holding one candidate to a higher bar while ignoring the other, and he blasted them for their obvious bias. Because of the moderators’ biased attitude, he called the event “brain-watering,” emphasizing that the debate reflected the increasing power of DEI in politics.
