Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz had a candid phone conversation with President-elect Donald Trump regarding his potential nomination as Attorney General, which revealed a grim outlook for his confirmation. While Gaetz had initially gained traction with the Senate through a “charm offensive,” it quickly became clear that he lacked the necessary support for confirmation, sources told The Daily Mail.

An insider said that It was clear this was going to be complicated and drag on into February, March. The confirmation of a strong Attorney General was seen as crucial to Trump’s plans, including addressing immigration issues and overhauling the Department of Justice (DOJ) on day one of his presidency.

During the call, Trump explained the reality of the situation to Gaetz but did not push him to step aside. Despite their efforts to secure votes, it became evident that Gaetz was still short of the required backing. A source said that Donald Trump made it clear that he couldn’t move the votes in the direction they needed.

Gaetz made the decision to end the call soon after. Although his discussions with senators had been fruitful and encouraging, Gaetz clarified in a statement that it was becoming evident that his confirmation was taking attention away from the crucial job of the Trump/Vance transition. Gaetz stated that he will be withdrawing from consideration and that there is no time to squander on an unnecessary Washington brawl. He reiterated his resolve to back President Trump and his policies.

Trump expressed gratitude for Gaetz’s efforts, acknowledging that Gaetz did very well in the nomination process but ultimately did not want to be a distraction to the administration. Trump said that Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Vice President-elect, also praised Gaetz for his patriotism and his decision to withdraw out of respect for the administration. Vance said, noting that Gaetz decided to withdraw for the good of the administration saying that he is extremely grateful for the work Matt put into the nomination process.

Following Gaetz’s withdrawal, it was announced by President-elect Trump that his new pick for Attorney General would be former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. Bondi’s record as a prosecutor and her work combating violent criminals and opioid abuse were lauded by Trump. It was stated by Trump that Bondi would refocus the DOJ on its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again. It was emphasized that Bondi, a strong supporter of the America First agenda, would do a terrific job as Attorney General.
