Tania Fernandes Anderson, a Boston City Councilor, was arrested by the FBI on Friday morning and is now facing multiple public corruption charges. The FBI had been investigating Fernandes Anderson, a prominent Democrat official, for several months. Authorities were seen outside her Dorchester home during the arrest.

Here is what happened, Fernandes Anderson faces one theft accusation and five wire fraud charges about federally funded programs right after the arrest, Michelle Wu, the leftist mayor of Boston, quickly demanded her resignation. According to the charges, Fernandes Anderson violated regulations prohibiting city councilors from hiring immediate family members as paid staffers. Despite this, she hired two family members in 2022 and later fired them after being informed by the Ethics Commission of a $5,000 fine related to the violation.

Her campaign also came under scrutiny from the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, which found that Fernandes Anderson had made contributions exceeding the legal limit and failed to file timely deposit information.

In response to the charge, Special Agent in Charge Jodi Cohen said that her actions, as claimed in today’s indictment, are a betrayal of the diligent taxpayers in the city of Boston, who have every right to believe that the city’s money is in capable and trustworthy hands. This case demonstrates the daily efforts made by the FBI and its partners to combat public corruption and the harm it causes to citizens’ trust in the government.

Councilor Fernandes Anderson was swiftly distanced from Mayor Wu, who asserted that she had the same right to a fair trial as everyone else in the town. He did, however, urge Councilor Fernandes Anderson to resign since the gravity of these accusations damages public confidence and will make it more difficult for her to successfully serve the city.

Fernandes Anderson, who represents District 7, which includes portions of the South End, Roxbury, Dorchester, and Fenway, was elected to the Boston City Council in November 2021 and as the first migrant Muslim-American and African elected to the council, she created history. Fernandes Anderson has not yet responded to her detention, but her legal issues indicate that corruption in the Democratic Party has once again taken place.
