President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, made a strong statement in Chicago on Tuesday, targeting the city’s sanctuary policies and the local leaders who support them. Speaking at a holiday event hosted by the Law and Order PAC and the Northwest Side GOP Club, Homan directed his criticism specifically at Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor J.B. Pritzker, both of whom are known for their sanctuary stance. Homan made it clear that if they obstruct Trump’s immigration enforcement plans, they would face serious consequences.

Homan, who was appointed to lead what he called the largest deportation effort ever planned, warned that his team would start operations in Chicago, focusing on criminals and gang members. He stressed that if Mayor Johnson hindered the efforts by harboring illegal immigrants, he would be prosecuted. Homan’s plans included sending ICE agents into the city to target criminal elements, specifically those involved in gangs or violent activities.

During the event, Chicago aldermen Nicholas Sposato and Ray Lopez offered their support for Homan’s plans, emphasizing that they agreed with focusing on dangerous criminals and not the broader immigrant population, including those protected under DACA.

In response to Homan’s remarks, Governor Pritzker’s office issued a statement condemning his comments, accusing the Trump administration of making baseless attacks. Pritzker’s office asserted that the governor would continue to lead Illinois competently, despite what they described as chaos from Trump’s team.

The tension between local Illinois leadership and the incoming Trump administration over immigration policies was highlighted by Homan’s direct threats, signaling a new phase in the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement, especially in sanctuary cities like Chicago.
