Actor and comedian Bill Burr shared his controversial thoughts on the recent assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson during an episode of his Monday Morning Podcast. Burr expressed frustration over the lack of empathy shown by the public toward the general treatment of people by health insurance companies, particularly when individuals are at their most vulnerable.

Burr criticized the health insurance industry for denying claims after people have consistently paid premiums. He also condemned the actions of insurance companies, which, following Thompson’s death, began removing photos and names of their CEOs from websites after journalists like Taylor Lorenz started publicly posting them. Burr called these CEOs selfish, greedy pieces of shit and expressed his satisfaction that they were now fearful for their safety. He claimed that while these CEOs may not physically pull the trigger, their actions lead to devastating consequences, likening them to mass murderers due to their impact on people’s lives.

The assassination of Brian Thompson has led to the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, a former high school valedictorian, who was apprehended after a week-long manhunt. Mangione, a Maryland native, was found with a document that expressed his extreme views on the healthcare industry. The three-page handwritten document, which police described as reflecting Mangione’s mindset, criticized corporate America and detailed his motivations for the crime.

While some on the political left have shown sympathy for Mangione or even celebrated the act, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned these views, emphasizing that vigilante justice is unacceptable in a civil society. Shapiro stated that, while frustrations with the healthcare system are valid, murder is never an appropriate response.
