House Speaker Mike Johnson faced criticism from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez following his apparent support for a resolution proposed by Rep. Nancy Mace. The resolution aims to restrict men from using restrooms designated exclusively for women on Capitol Hill.

The resolution was enacted as the first openly transgender member of Congress, Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, gets ready to enter office in January. The law was proposed by Mace, a victim of sexual assault and abuse, as a way to protect women. Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, denounced the initiative as divisive and dangerous.

Ocasio-Cortez stated that the actions of Nancy Mace and Speaker Johnson pose risks to women and girls. Concerns were raised regarding the resolution’s lack of a practical enforcement mechanism and its potential to encourage invasive practices. The rhetoric was described as creating conditions where women and girls could face invasive scrutiny based on subjective perceptions of their appearance.

Further criticism was directed at the resolution, with it being described as “disgusting and rooted in bullying.” The assertion was made that women should have the freedom to dress and express themselves without the fear of harassment stemming from Republican claims about the need to inspect someone’s gender to determine their access to bathrooms.

Mace, however, stood firm, citing her personal experiences as a survivor and her commitment to safeguarding private spaces for women.

Concerns were raised about privacy in women’s locker rooms, with a particular emphasis on the vulnerability of women in such spaces. Citing personal experiences of abuse and PTSD, it was argued that measures must be taken to ensure the safety and protection of women in private settings.

Rep. Nancy Mace, known as the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, received significant backing for her position on privacy in locker rooms. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) voiced his support in a post on X, emphasizing that Mace’s concerns about sharing such spaces with biological males are both logical and well-founded.

Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly added, that it is about protecting women’s rights to safe, private spaces. Forcing women to share bathrooms with biological men isn’t progress—it’s rather bullying.

Conservative commentator CJ Pearson voiced strong support for maintaining gender-specific spaces, asserting that men should not be allowed in women’s restrooms. He emphasized his stance succinctly, stating that a man is a man, and they have no place in women’s restrooms. Period.

The debate underscores the broader cultural and legislative clash over transgender rights and gender identity, with both sides deeply entrenched in their positions.
