Before departing office, former President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of multiple individuals on death row, a decision that has now prompted U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to push for a reversal. In a letter addressed to the Department of Justice (DOJ) staff on Wednesday, Bondi condemned Biden’s commutations, arguing that they undermined the integrity of the justice system and disregarded the rule of law.

It was stated in the letter by Bondi that these commutations had deprived victims’ families of the justice they had long fought for and had been promised by the Department of Justice. Further instructions were given to DOJ officials to take immediate action to restore justice for the families affected by the 37 commuted murderers.

One directive includes exploring opportunities for victims’ families to publicly share how Biden’s commutations impacted them, a move Bondi described as vital to restoring trust and ensuring accountability, as reported by Fox News. Additionally, Bondi intends to direct U.S. attorneys’ offices to pursue state-level charges against those who had their death sentences reduced, but only in cases where legal and procedural conditions allow. This effort would be carried out in coordination with victims’ families and other key stakeholders.

Furthermore, Bondi’s letter mandates the Federal Bureau of Prisons to enforce confinement conditions that reflect the security risks posed by these individuals, taking into account the severity of their crimes and prior criminal records.

Biden’s decision, made in late December, resulted in the removal of 37 individuals from federal death row, converting their sentences to life imprisonment without parole. The White House at the time justified the move as preventing the incoming Trump administration from enforcing execution sentences that would not align with current policies.

A statement from the Biden administration highlighted the broader impact of the decision, claiming that it contributed to criminal justice reforms benefiting marginalized communities. The statement also noted that Biden planned to take further steps regarding pardons and commutations in the weeks ahead.

Despite these commutations, three individuals remained on death row: Dylann Roof, responsible for the Charleston church massacre; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bomber; and Robert Bowers, the perpetrator of the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh.

Beyond the death penalty controversy, Bondi has recently made headlines for taking legal action against New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Attorney General Letitia James over policies that allegedly protect illegal immigrants in violation of federal law. It was declared by Bondi at a press conference that a new direction was being taken by this Justice Department. It was also stated that New York had chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens, but that this would now come to an end.

New York’s DMV Commissioner, Mark Schroeder, is also facing charges about the state’s Green Light laws, which allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses while restricting certain federal agencies from accessing this information. It was argued by Bondi that a ‘green light’ had been given to illegal immigrants while law enforcement was prevented from verifying identities during traffic stops. She further pointed out that officers had no access to background information, thereby putting their safety at risk daily.

Bondi also warned that other states failing to comply with federal immigration laws would be held accountable, citing the Justice Department’s recent legal challenge against sanctuary policies in Illinois as an example of ongoing enforcement efforts.
