The legal dispute originated from remarks made by George Stephanopoulos during a March 2024 interview with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week. In the segment, Stephanopoulos erroneously stated that Donald Trump had been found liable for rape by two juries in the E. Jean Carroll case. Trump’s legal team argued that the inaccurate comments severely damaged his reputation and amounted to defamation. The settlement of the lawsuit, which included financial reparations and a public apology, brings closure to the high-profile dispute.

As part of the agreement, ABC News has also included an editor’s statement in the relevant article expressing regret for the comments made during the interview. George Stephanopoulos and ABC News have issued an apology, according to the document, for comments he made regarding Trump during an interview with Representative Nancy Mace on March 10th and additionally, the network consented to formally acknowledge the errors and provide clarification on their position.
