The Big Blue State Governor Race Takes a Sharp Turn

There are only a few weeks left until the midterm elections, and the polls are showing a red trend that is growing stronger. In the midst of growing economic anxiety, the Republican Party appears to be surging, and some states that have historically voted Democratic for governor could end up electing a Republican for the first time in decades.

This includes a Democratic stronghold on the east coast, and very few people thought it was possible for the state to switch parties this year. Kathy Hochul, another Democrat, was sworn in as the new governor of New York after the resignation of the state’s previous governor, the disgraced Andrew Cuomo. And her overall approval rating in 2022 has been fairly satisfactory, for the most part.

Only a few short months ago, it was anticipated that Hochul would handily defeat the Republican candidate Lee Zeldin. In the majority of polls, Hochul was shown to have a sizeable lead; some of the surveys even suggested that she had a lead of over 20 points. On the other hand, it appears that there has been a significant shift in the mentality of New York voters.

This comes just one week after the race was reclassified as “leans Democratic” from the previous classification of likely Democratic. According to one poll, Hochul had a 24-point lead in the month of August, but that lead quickly began to shrink in the month of September. And now, politically moderate New York may be on the verge of experiencing a sudden shift in its political ideology.

This is not the only instance in which the political climate in New York has shifted; just a few weeks ago, we found out that a Republican candidate in one of the state’s congressional districts had taken a 5-point lead in the race. And with the gubernatorial races in Oregon and New York now officially being listed as toss-ups, it appears that the most leftist bastions in the country are being shaken.

It is possible that Hochul’s numbers are suffering as a result of the alarming rise in crime in her state. According to the chief pollster at the Trafalgar Group, Robert Cahaly, this is the most important issue for New York voters.

It is unfortunate for the party in control of the government that the economy and criminal activity are currently at the top of the priority lists of voters across the country. The contests for Congress and the Senate are both being impacted by the same problems.

Unfortunately, Hochul has only consented to one debate, and Zeldin will not debate at all if his opponent won’t commit to more than one, thus it’s possible that neither candidate will actually take part. Because of this, voters will have to rely on the media and social media for all their information, which may or may not tip the scales in Hochul’s favor.
