Supreme Court Makes Tight 5-4 Ruling

Several decisions were handed down by the Supreme Court today, some of which will have repercussions for a large number of people in the United States. In one of the cases, the rights of criminals in regard to appealing their sentences were discussed. And in a ruling that was very close, 5-4, the court decided against the inmates. The court issued its decision regarding the case of Shoop v. Twyford, which dealt with the rights of inmates to file appeals.

It would appear that the inmates are trying to gain an opportunity to appeal their sentences by arguing that they are being held in prison illegally. Before the court granted a writ of habeas corpus, the inmates requested that the court order them to provide evidence for the writ. Complicated, but it appears that the court did not accept the evidence that was provided by an inmate before the court permitted them to search for additional evidence.

When it came to this decision, the Supreme Court was divided along ideological lines, with newly appointed Justice Gorsuch siding with the court’s three liberal justices. The ruling places restrictions on the activities that inmates can engage in while waiting for their chance to be released. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the court is not as ideologically divided as the left would have you believe it to be.

The fact that conservative justices have sided with liberal justices demonstrates that they are making their decisions about each case based on the merits of the case as determined by the law. These justices are not treating each case as if it were a referendum on their own personal preferences, the way a partisan politician might. At least for the time being, American citizens can rest assured that these justices are giving each case the thoughtful consideration it deserves.
