Republican Shuts Down Gun Control Deal
Following the shooting that took place in Uvalde, members of Congress have been working feverishly to formulate a response. Gun control has become the standard “solution” proposed by Democrats in the aftermath of mass shootings. Conversations behind closed doors were taking place between a number of senators. It appeared that some Republicans were willing to make concessions on the position they hold regarding the Second Amendment.

But one of the senators from Texas made the decision to put an end to the farce. Sen. John Cornyn left the room after a two-hour-long negotiation session with Democrats during which he attempted to reach an agreement with them but ultimately failed. He declared that he was “done” with the negotiations and would be leaving for the day. It would appear that Democrats are unwilling to negotiate with Republicans in order to reach an agreement on a bill that contains concessions.

Republicans have long advocated arming teachers as one way to deter potential mass shooters from carrying out their attacks. The majority of Democrats, including Joe Biden, have voiced their vehement opposition to this measure. Instead, those on the left have been pushing for increased restrictions on who can purchase firearms. A complete prohibition on so-called “assault weapons” is advocated by some.
When ten Republicans indicated that they were willing to compromise, it appeared as though the Senate was going to vote on some legislation. That is almost always a code for moving to the left while bending over backward. However, as a result of Cornyn’s withdrawal from the negotiations, the Democrats have lost one of the sixty votes necessary to break the filibuster. It is extremely unlikely that they will be able to locate another Republican who is willing to satisfy their requirements.
